Frequently Asked Questions

What’s Soft Tissue Surgery?

“Soft Tissue” refers to surgery involving structures outside of the skeleton.  At Lakeshore Veterinary Hospital, our patients benefit from the availability of specialized medications, diagnostic and monitoring equipment, and a staff dedicated to top-notch pain control.

The most common soft tissue procedures performed at our hospital are tumor removal or biopsy, gastrointestinal surgery, urinary tract surgery, wound repair, respiratory surgery, and medically indicated ear surgery. In this modern era of veterinary medicine, tools such as ultrasound allow us to detect problems like abdominal tumors at a much earlier stage than in the past. Early removal of such tumors by a skilled surgeon can greatly improve the prognosis of many patients.

How soon can my pet come home?

Because we look at the individual patient for every case, there is not a set timeline for surgery discharge. Most pets go home the next day, however, some may require an extended stay. Whatever the case may be, we will work with you to come up with a care plan that fits you and your pet’s needs.

What Aftercare Is Required Following a soft tissue Surgery in Mandeville?

Most pets need to wear an e-collar (cone) until the wound has healed to avoid surgical site infection from licking. We also now offer bodysuits for a cone alternative to help protect the incision site and keep your pet from licking the area. We will provide pain control before, during, and after surgery, as well as pain medications to go home to help keep your pet as comfortable as possible. Your pet will also require exercise restriction in addition to no baths or swimming while they heal post-op. This usually takes 10-14 days.
